In November 2009 my children and I collected socks for the homeless. The purpose of this service project was to involve my children in an easy community service project to give to others who are less fortunate. Our goal was to collect and distribute socks to the homeless.
My daughters and I began this service project in November 2009. First I researched wish list items for homeless individuals by calling shelters and via the internet. Next I discovered the importance of clean socks and that they were often overlooked for donations. Then I sent an email to all my family and friends to create awareness and ask for sock donations. I also informed my co-workers about our service project and invited them to participate. Additionally, our extended family joined in for the 2009 Christmas holiday and donated socks in place of some gifts.
Also my oldest daughter, Maya, got the 5th and 6th grade classes at school involved. I assisted each teacher with coordinating the collection, providing incentives, and planning a party to celebrate. They collected 56 pairs of socks and touched 56 lives! After that the entire school decided to collect socks for Catholic Schools Week!
On February 13, 2010 my daughters and I delivered over 120 socks to the following homeless multi-service day center:
