I Give Socks!!

When Faced With A Homeless Person What Do You Do?  I Give Them Socks!

How do you feel when you pull up to a red light or freeway ramp and see a homeless person standing with a sign?  Most people, depending on the day, feel uncomfortable and want to avoid the request for a financial donation.  To be honest there have been situations when I thought:  “If I look straight ahead and do not make eye contact they will not approach me.  Please do not let them walk up to my window today.”  Most of the time I just do not have the extra cash to spare.   

I have never been at ease with "doing nothing" when I see someone in need.  That fact that I am a giver-at-heart compels me to help others in need.  Though I have experienced a few negative encounters that have contributed to my feelings of uncertainty when giving cash, the good experiences far outweigh the bad.  I am not alone and realize that many people wonder if they should give money to the homeless on the street and if it really helps. 

So what do I do in this situation?  I give socks.

I give socks to the homeless standing on street corners, freeway ramps, panhandling on downtown streets, and standing outside stores.  I keep a bag of new socks in the front seat of my car so that I can hand them out the window in a hurry with a smile.  I give several pairs and I am always greeted with “Thank you!  I needed socks”.

I never have to ignore the person holding a sign that asks for help again!  When faced with a homeless person what do you do?  I give them socks!

Please consider partnering with Socks for the Homeless for a sock collection community service project.  A Socks for the Homeless representative can provide assistance in any of the following areas:

• Decorated collection box(es)
• Flyers, email announcements, etc…
• Pick up of sock donations
• Delivery/distribution to homeless service organizations

Some organizations conduct their own independent Socks for the Homeless Community Service Projects and just need help with pick-up and delivery - Great!

Other organizations want help with boxes, flyers, and getting the word out - Great!

We are always open to new sock collection ideas (Sock Hops, Neighborhood Events, etc…). 

Let me know what you need and we can work together to make your community service project a success.

2013 SOCKS FOR THE HOMELESS YOUTH COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD

WHO:

Socks for the Homeless, Inc. is a community service project serving the homeless population in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Our mission is simply to collect socks for the homeless.

WHAT: 

The 2013 Socks for the Homeless Youth Community Service Award will be awarded to three youth volunteers (ages 5-18) that conduct a sock drive(s) in their school, church, organization, community, etc. in 2013.  Donate socks to Socks for the Homeless, Inc.  It is FREE to apply. 

 

WHEN:  2013

·         12/31/2013 - Deadline to apply

·         1/1/2013 to 12/31/2013 - The sock collection project must take place between these dates.

There are no time limits or time requirement on individual projects. 

·         2/1/2014 – Winner will be announced on website.  Only award winners will be notified individually.

 

WHERE:

HOW: 

Be Creative!

Adults may assist, however it is required that youth volunteers (ages 5-18) lead the sock collection project.  Please check that your application includes the following:

·         Essay (500 words or less)

·         Photo of Project

·         1 letter of recommendation from a helping adult (teacher, minister, mentor, parent, etc.)

 

PRIZES

One $25 award for the winning project from K-6^th grade applicants;

One $25 award for the winning project from 7-8^th grade applicants;

One $25 award for the winning project from 9-12^th grade applicants.
