See a Need....Fill a Need

I have spoken with two Indianapolis homeless service organizations in the past week and the need for SOCKS is real!
Socks are one of the last donations that people think to give....and the organizations run out frequently.
There is a constant, daily, regular need for clean dry SOCKS by the homeless community.

That is where we come in!
See a need... fill a need.

I hope Socks for the Homeless and our partner organizations can supply socks to several organizations this year and keep them supplied for a long, long time.
Thank you for all your efforts and support.

Helping Our Own People (HOOP)

Helping Our Own People, Inc. (HOOP) is an all volunteer 501©3 organization whose mission is to provide basic necessities to those living on the streets of Indianapolis to survive another night … no strings attached … no questions asked … unconditional giving.

The vision of HOOP is to be recognized by the Homeless community of Indianapolis as a trusted friend, available for support and/or advice, to be able to provide food and or clothing in a time of need, while connecting on a personal level as well.

The beauty of HOOP is in the UNCONDITIONAL GIVING.  No questions asked.  From the beginning, we in HOOP are not required to judge those we serve. We simply ask, “Are you hungry?” If someone accepts our offer, we pour a cup of soup and hand the person a sandwich and snacks. Many people have answered, “No, I’m okay,” and walked on.

Over the first three months of this year, we have passed out over 90 gallons of soup, 1300 sandwiches, 1400 hard boiled eggs, 348 Blankets along with shirts, pants, socks, underwear and personal care items.

Foot care among the homeless is a significant health concern...

  • Foot care among the homeless is a significant health concern
  • Members of the homeless population spend most of their time walking from place to place, frequently with inadequate socks and poorly fitting shoes. Health conditions like diabetes, prevalent in the homeless population, can further complicate the danger of poor foot care to include skin ulcers, infections and even tissue death.
  • Members of the homeless walk everywhere.  It is their way of getting around and good socks and good shoes are crucial.
  • Summer is the worst time for foot infections and foot injuries related to poor hygiene. Many homeless individuals must wear the same pair of dirty, sweaty socks for a week or more at a time, and have poor fitting shoes.

Recurrent Need

Recurrent Need
The need for socks is a "recurrent need". This means that the need is constant.

The Homeless put their socks through more wear and tear in a week than most socks see in a year. Most are forced to sleep with their shoes on to prevent them from being stolen, and they spend most of their days walking. Foot wellness is a major concern for overall physical well being.

A documentary is being filmed by Mark Horvath. Mark travels throughout the USA and allows homeless people to tell their own story.  Mark gives away socks as he travels, for he recognizes the important role that clean socks play in the life of someone on the street.
